Web3
Blockchain Basics•blog.difficulty.beginner
Web3 is the next evolution of the internet, built on blockchain technology, where users own their data and digital assets instead of centralized companies.
Simple Explanation
- Web1 (1990s): Read-only internet (static websites)
- Web2 (2000s-now): Read-write internet (social media, apps controlled by companies)
- Web3 (now): Read-write-own internet (decentralized, user-controlled)
Key Principles
- Decentralization: No single company controls it
- Ownership: Users own their data and digital assets
- Trustless: No need to trust intermediaries
- Permissionless: Anyone can participate
Web3 Technologies
- Blockchain networks (Ethereum, Solana)
- Cryptocurrency and tokens
- Decentralized apps (dApps)
- Smart contracts
- Decentralized storage (IPFS)
- Decentralized identity
Example
In Web2, you post photos on Instagram, but Instagram owns the content and can delete your account. In Web3, you would own your content as NFTs and control where and how they're displayed.
